CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Jacob cursed as Néstor ran back into the pilot’s cabin. A few more bullets panged off the side of the ship.

The ship’s pumps started a regular thumping below their feet.

“Is that going to be enough?” Jacob called.

Néstor didn’t reply, because at that moment, the pirate captain called over.

“You’re sinking. Surrender now and we’ll spare your lives.”

Jacob looked back at the tub where the captain’s young daughter hid. Then he looked over at Jana.

“Not going to happen,” the archaeologist said.

Néstor put his head back inside the main cabin. “Let them get close, and then we’ll let them have it.”

Jacob looked in his eyes. “I’m sorry.”

Néstor gave him a grin. “We’ve been through worse and made it through.”

He moved over to the tub, opened it a crack, and said, “Stay put, honey. We’re in for some rough stuff.”

“OK, Dad,” Eva replied, sounding less worried than Jacob felt.

Jacob crouched down and rummaged through his duffel bag, pulling out two grenades with red rings painted on their tops.

“When they get close,” he told his companions, “cover me and I’ll give them a nasty surprise.”

Néstor gave him a thumbs up, then moved back into the pilot’s cabin.

“We surrender!” he called over to the pirates. “We’ll lay down our arms if you promise not to kill us.”

“All right. We don’t want any more bloodshed. Drop your weapons over the side.”

“Damn, now what do we do?” Jana said.

“Hold on,” Néstor said, reappearing again and rummaging around in a footlocker. He pulled out three old rifles. “Got these off of the last guys who tried to steal my ship. Never thought I’d have much use for them.”

He moved to the porthole and shouted. “Only one of us is coming out of cover. You’ll see me throw all three guns overboard, then I’m getting back inside.”

There was a short pause.

“Fair enough, but if you pull anything, we’ll blow you out of the water.”

Néstor gave Jacob an uncertain look and moved out on deck. He held the rifles high and one by one threw them into the water. He didn’t waste a moment getting back into the bulletproof cabin.

“Let’s hope that works,” he said, moving back to his post in the pilot’s cabin.

The overpowered engine of the trawler started up, and the ship turned toward them in order to move alongside.

“OK, I’m going out there,” Jacob said once they drew a bit closer.

“Good luck,” Jana said.

“Thanks.” I’ll need it.

He had the grenades stuffed in his back pockets.

Leaving his MP5 by the door, he moved out of the back of the cabin, hands held high.

Several men stood by the gunwale of the pirate ship. Their guns zeroed in on him the instant he appeared.

“Whoa! We don’t want any trouble,” Jacob shouted.

“For someone who doesn’t want trouble, you sure are prepared for it,” the pirate captain said. “Your cabin is bulletproof.”

Um, yeah, that’s kind of hard to explain.

“We’re in the import/export business,” Jacob said.

“What you got on board?”

“A shipment of cocaine.”

“It’s ours now,” one of the crew said. The others laughed.

They were almost alongside now.
